ARGE Baustahl, founded in 1949, is a trusted specialist for structural steel in the Innsbruck region. Known for delivering tailored solutions for complex construction projects such as the Brenner Base Tunnel, the family business values long-term partnerships and the well-being of its 70-person team. As demand increased, manual pre-production steps began to limit both speed and quality.

The Challenge

Pre-production relied on manually entering data from reinforcement plans that arrived in many different formats. Technicians had to extract every detail by hand before steel shaping could begin. This created several issues:

  • High manual effort

  • Increased risk of errors

  • Slow processing times

  • Workload peaks during busy periods

  • Limited ability to scale

To keep pace with demand, ARGE Baustahl needed a more reliable and scalable approach.

Our Partnership

Together with ARGE Baustahl, we applied Workflow Intelligence to rethink how pre-production should work. By combining domain expertise with digital capability, we designed an approach that reduces friction, supports technicians in their daily work and prepares the business for continued growth.

Our Solution

We built a platform that unifies data handling, intelligent automation and a streamlined end-to-end process. Guided by the principles of Workflow Intelligence, the solution integrates human expertise, modern technology and a system-wide understanding of operations.

The solution at a glance:

  • Human-centered: Developed around the real working practices of ARGE Baustahl’s team. Manual data entry was significantly reduced, allowing employees to focus on oversight and quality.

  • Technology-driven: OCR, AI document intelligence, image segmentation and automated backchecking increase both speed and precision. Technicians can focus their expertise where it makes the most impact.

  • System-wide: The entire pre-production process was digitised from start to finish. Reinforcement plans of any format now follow a unified flow, improving consistency and reducing errors.

The result is an intuitive and efficient platform that supports daily work and provides a foundation for continuous improvement.

What We Achieved Together

Standardised workflows

All reinforcement plans follow one unified process to generate steel lists.

Workflow efficiency

Automated image recognition, data extraction and backchecking accelerate formerly manual work.

Error reduction

Automation lowers the risk of mistakes and reduces production waste.

Real-time output

Lead times from order to delivery have been significantly reduced.

Faster quoting

Custom jobs can be prepared more quickly.

Automated controls

Systematic backchecking ensures that final steel deliveries match planning requirements.

ARGE Baustahl Workflow

How we made it happen

Phase 1

Discover

In-person kick-off workshop at ARGE Baustahl HQ. Automating pre-production identified an area that could be optimised for most impact.
Phase 1

Develop

A cross-functional team built and tested the first prototype in weekly sprints.
Phase 1

Launch

Phase-1 prototype converts steel lists selected in reinforcement plans into file type usable by steel-forming machines.
Phase 2

Evaluate

Success prompts expansion. Second workshop defines automatic steel-list recognition as the next phase.
Phase 2

Expand

The prototype was extended and tested with enhanced functionality.
Phase 2

Enhance

Phase-2 prototype launches with automated steel-list recognition.
Phase 3

In Action

The tool has been used daily since 2023 and continues to evolve through ongoing improvement.

The Results

ARGE Baustahl now processes 10 to 12 reinforcement plans per day with far less manual work. Deliveries that once required a week can now be completed in days. With workload pressure reduced, the team can focus more on strategic tasks. Leadership is sharing the results at industry conferences and exploring how to extend the SteelFileGenerAItor into the customer ordering experience.
