Business is good for Innsbruck’s ARGE Baustahl. Established in 1949, it offers a range of structural steel products and services and is well-regarded in the region for delivering custom solutions for complex projects (like the Brenner Base Tunnel). A family business, it places high value on cooperative partnerships with its clients and the happiness of its tight-knit team of 70 experts (some of whom are third-generation employees).

But what if ARGE Baustahl’s business could be even better?

Shaping structural steel may be done by machine, but the initial set-up involves manual data entry. In this phase, reinforcement plans are translated into the file format steel-shaping machines require to generate the final product. Created by structural engineers, reinforcement plans include steel lists that collate the shapes, quantities, lengths, and weights of all the structural steel needed in a project. Reinforcement plans and steel lists are not, however, standardized. ARGE Baustahl receives them in various formats and file types, and making them usable requires manually entering every piece of data. This is time consuming and highly detail oriented, with even small errors leading to expensive problems in production.

Employing Workflow Intelligence methods, sclable and ARGE Baustahl improved pre-production processes with strategic automation.

Using advanced techniques like OCR (optical character recognition), Azure AI Document Intelligence, image segmentation, and digital table recognition, sclable developed a working prototype of custom software called ‘SteelFileGenerAItor’. Launched in two phases, the first version extracted data from steel lists manually selected in reinforcement plans. The second version expanded functionality to include automatic steel list recognition. With controls like automated backchecking also in place, ARGE Baustahl now oversees the generation of steel-list files - rather than doing it all themselves.

What we achieved together

Standardized workflows

No matter the file type, list format, or layout, all reinforcement plans now undergo the same process to generate steel lists.

Workflow efficiency

Automating image recognition, data extraction and backchecking, the pace and accuracy of once-manual work is improved.

Error reduction

Manual entry of steel list data is highly detail oriented. Automation reduces errors and avoids output waste.

Real-time output

Increasing the speed of pre-production, the lead times between order to delivery are significantly reduced.

Faster quoting

In a quick-turnaround business, automation speeds up request response times. Custom jobs can be quoted with better efficiency.

Automated controls

Automatic backchecking between planning and production ensures the final structural steel deliveries are accurate.

ARGE Baustahl Workflow

How we made it happen

Phase 1

Discover

In-person kick-off workshop at ARGE Baustahl HQ. Automating pre-production identified an area that could be optimised for most impact.
Phase 1

Develop

A Data Scientist, Business Design Architect, UX and Service Designer work in sprints, with client weeklies, to build, test, and feedback first working prototype.
Phase 1

Launch

Phase-1 prototype converts steel lists selected in reinforcement plans into file type usable by steel-forming machines.
Phase 2

Evaluate

Success prompts expansion. Second workshop defines automatic steel-list recognition as the next phase.
Phase 2

Expand

Cross-functional team works in sprints, with client weeklies, to build, test, and feedback prototype expansion.
Phase 2

Enhance

Phase-2 prototype launches with automated steel-list recognition.
Phase 3

In Action

Used daily since December 2023, Continuous Product Improvement ensures functionality. Prospects for further development are in place.

Continuously using SteelFileGenerAItor since 2023, ARGE Baustahl is producing structural steel faster. Ten to 12 reinforcement plans are converted into steel lists daily, and deliveries that had lead times of a week can now be executed in days. With their workload reduced, they can now take on more strategic work for the business. Leadership is so satisfied, they’re sharing the results at industry conferences and looking at how to integrate SteelFileGenerAItor into the customer ordering experience.
